Living on the Edge

TASK. On your blog, write a letter to your best friend or a family member telling them about your trip to the tundra. Your letter must have a greeting (eg. Dear…) followed by 5 – 6 sentences of information about what your experience. Let’s imagine that your teacher decides to take you on a class trip to the tundra before the weather changes too much and you aren’t able to go.

                                                            Dear Mum

this is a story about my trip to tundra. One day miss Ireland decided to go to tundra she invited the whole class to go for a visit. It was a 20 hour walk. It was really cold and dry and there were no sighs of trees any where it was kind of hard to breathe it was 280C!

There was nothing but sand and scrap metal floating around everywhere it looked like we were in the middle of nowhere. We found a place to sleep we all got a pile of rocks to sleep on all 27 of us. We were all running out of water and had to get back. There was heaps of sand storms and we were really cold and dehydrated we also had no food! It took us 20 hours to walk from tundra to school. We will Never go back again!

  1. Kia Ora Nevaeh,

My name is Rachel and I am working on the Summer Learning Journey programme this year with Allie, Hasiba and Evelyn. It is great to see that you are participating in the SLJ and making such great progress! I have really enjoyed your posts, particularly this letter that you have written to your mom about your imaginary trip to the tundra. I think that you have captured the essence of the tundra. It is very cold, bleak and barren (empty). There are hardly any trees around but there are piles of rocks, as you wrote about in your letter. Can you imagine trying to sleep on rocks? That does not sound very comfortable!

I can completely understand why you would say that you don't ever want to go back to the tundra for a visit. My dad has actually been there (in real life) and he enjoyed it. He said that it was unlike anywhere that he had ever been but that, in some ways, the emptiness of the land was quite beautiful. He said that the sky was huge and that he was able to see the Northern Lights one night. I have yet to see the Northern Lights in person but I would absolutely love it. They look amazing! Have you ever seen pictures of the Northern (or Southern) lights? If not, you might want to check out this website: http://www.fanpop.com/clubs/aurora-borealis/images/40697739/title/northern-lights-photo

We also have an activity about the Southern Lights later in the programme. Feel free to check it out (Week 3,Day 4, Activity 1).

Bye for now, Nevaeh. Have a great day!

    Best,
    Rachel :)
