Cannibal Gorge Recount

On the 15th of December 2020, Year eight girls went on a overnight tramp to Cannibal Gorge. In total there is only six year eight girls but three of them were sick so that just left 3 that were going. We had planed the meals we were going to have while staying there, we had back country for dinner and pancakes/bacon for breakfast then for lunch we just packed our own. The walk was a bit challenging for me there was a few long up hills. I had a stomach ache the whole time that was not very helpful but when we had final reached the hut  witch took about four hours to get to we had a snack then went swimming in the creek out the front of the hut. We then played card games and shanghai witch was fun we had tea then Mrs Kemp terrified us with her ghost stories by then it was 10:30 and we went to bed and keep getting scared of every noise we heard because of hearing ghost story's. Next morning was way easier i didn't have a stomach ache and we occupied our minds with talking and that made us not think of the pain. We finally reached the carpark and stopped in reefton to get an ice cream.

Wilderness Bike Track

On the 22nd of September room 8 went on the wilderness cycle trail for the William Pike challenge. We were sorted into car groups at school then we drove to Milltown where the bike ride started. There are different  sections of the bike ride, some are hard, some are easy. The start of the trail was pretty hard because it had quite a bit of up hill and I'm not an experienced bike rider either.

On the ride I didn't have many stops because I was behind a bit. The people in the front would stop and I would still be biking then when I finally caught up with them they would go again so I was quite exhausted!  The one stop we did make though was at Cowboy’s Paradise. This was kinda scary because a scary man came out and threatened people in my class that he would kick them up ‘bleep’ because they were skidding on the gravel. It was even more scary because he owned a shooting range and was busted for owning a massive weed farm sooo...

After that we stopped at a place I forget the name of and had lunch. There were cars there if you didn't want to do the other part of the ride. I didn't, so I sat in the shelter thing for a bit. When one of the adults asked me if I had told Ms Kemp that I had pulled out I said that I had forgotten to  so they made me get on my bike to catch up with everyone.  But they were just so far away so I got picked up once again with a couple of other people

Anyway I tried my hardest, even though it was a challenge for me. I did think it was fun zooming down the hills but I wouldn't do it again for fun though!

Tramp Recount

                             Lake Daniels Tramp

On Wednesday the ninth of September Room 8 went on a spring day tramp to Lake Daniell( Mason Nicholls Hut)  for the William Pike Challenge. Parents helped transport us  there , The tramp was six hours including the travel time and stops.

Before we actually started walking we had to have our gear checked by the teacher because if we didn't have the correct gear then bad things could happen like getting hypothermia from wearing cotton instead of thermals, not bringing water and getting dehydrated, getting saturated because you didn't bring wet weather gear.

The walk was surrounded by beach forest which was pretty cool and the water was blue.  When we got to Lake Daniels hut we sat down and had lunch by the lake. There wasn't anyone on the tramp or in the hut which was weird but cool though,

The trip back felt way shorter than the trip there.  Some people (including me) got

yelled at for throwing moss at each other so we had to walk at the back in a straight line.

Apart from that it was a good walk, lots of people enjoyed it, it would be really fun if we could have stayed at the hut and gone swimming in the lake.

Health and Physical Education Level 4

WALT access and use information to make and action safe choices in a range of contexts.

WALT demonstrates willingness to accept challenges, learn new skills, and extend abilities in movement-related activities.

WALT specify individual responsibilities and to take collective action for the care and safety of others in the school and in the wider community.

Success Criteria:

  • I will discuss and demonstrate my understanding of the Skier’s Code of Conduct in pre-ski discussion and through my actions on the ski field… making responsible and appropriate choices throughout Ski Day.

  • I will undertake ski/snowboard lessons suitable for my skill level, seeking to improve my technique and control.

  •  I will be correctly equipped for my participation in Ski Day.

  • I will create a response to the ski trip to share my new learning.

Porters code of conduct Code of conduct:
People below you have the right of way:
Obey all ski area signage:

Look before you leap:`

Stop where you can be seen:
Don't lose what you use:
Stay in control - This was the main focus we worked on because it's the hardest thing to do when you're new to learning skiing and snowb=oarding. This was our main focus because as soon as you can stay in control you have done the hardest part.
Stay on the scene

In my ski lesson at porter heights it was really fun and I learnt a lot of new valuable skills and rules that i didn't know before. It was a great day and everyone had a really good time. I made it to the intermediate slope which I didn't think I would and smashed through the fence a couple of times before I got the hang of it.

In my snowboarding class it was really good and I learned a lot in the short time that we were in a lesson.  It was only me and Tyler in a lesson with the snowboarding instructor. I picked it up quite fast and I got onto the second slope quickly because the snowboarding instructor said that we were good enough to try the harder slope. By the end of the day I was really sore but had improved so much.

What should you bring? Bring ski pants, thermals and polypro tops, a warm hat, good sunglasses and a bike helmet if you're not hiring a ski helmet. we used everything we listed . Bring a big lunch with lots of sugar trets to keep your energy up!

One thing we found funny was watching all of the people fall over, we know they were only learning but sometimes it's quite funny seeing everybody fall over each other. We  also found ourselves falling over quite funny, one time Lily did a full back roly poly and then I got straight up.

Beach Cook Out

On Wednesday room 8 went to the beach behind the Marist rugby ground. We went to the beach for a cook out to fill in our out door activities and to have a good lunch. My group had Breeana, Lily, Nevaeh and ethan. Our group made burgers and smoors for the dessert. To build the fire we needed to collect tinder and kindling. For our group it was easy to find kindling and tinder. To get our kindling and tinder there was a bunch of sticks behind our group. When we went over there and collected the stuff we were able to start our fire. We used matches to start our fire. Ethan brought the meat patties, salt and cooking oil. Lily brought the buns and the precooked chips as well as the frying pan beetroot, mayo and hot plate. Nevey brought the marshmellows and the biscuits. Breeana brought chocolate and plastic plates. Our lunch was great, I would definitely have it again.

Short Story

New Zealand
I arrive in New Zealand on Tuesday 12 may 2020. At the Auckland airport it is a very beautiful country with lots of great views and amazing things to do. Most people in New Zealand seem to be really nice and friendly. In my time in new Zealand I went on lots of bush walks admiring the animals and the beautiful greenery around me. It was absolutely stunning. I also went to visit other amazing places such as the bay of islands, cathedral cove, mud pools,Jet Boating Down the Waiau Uwha River, bungee jumping and castle hill.I really recommend visiting at least some of these places. They are just incredible!! I then decided to try some of their local food. I was really hungry so I asked some of the locals where they would recommend for me to get food. They said to try some pavlova and real fruit ice cream, also mince and cheese pies. They were DELICIOUS, especially their real fruit ice cream. I recommend trying these foods.

In conclusion, New Zealand Is a Beautiful country everyone should experience.
I love their culture,Food, people and views. You MUST visit new Zealand!!

Information Report

What are isotherms, isobars, front, prevailing    wind, doldrums, and cirrus?

Isobars and isotherms are both lines on a weather map  that represent the patterns of pressure and
temperature.
They show how the temperatures and pressure are changing over space and so help describe
the large-scale weather patterns across a region in the map.

Front.

Prevailing winds are winds that blow from a single direction over a specific area of the earth.
Areas where prevailing winds meet are called convergence zones.
Prevailing winds - Wikipedia
(This picture is from wikipedia)

Doldrums are located a little north of the equator,
but the effects can be felt from way over  5 degrees north of the equator to 5 degrees south of it.
The trade winds border the Doldrums both to the north and south.
Then there are the prevailing westerlies in the higher latitudes and the polar easterlies near both poles.
What are Cirrus Clouds - Higgins Storm Chasing
(This picture is from met office)
Cirrus clouds form from the rise of dry air,
making the small quantity of water vapour in the air which undertakes deposition into ice
(to change from a gas directly into a solid).
Cirrus is made up completely of ice crystals,
which provides their white colour and form in a wide range of shapes and sizes.

How Snow Is Formed

How Snow And Rain Is Formed

Snow is created when the water vapor in the air freezes before it can turn into water;
this usually happens when it reaches 32 degrees fahrenheit.
That means it is allowing the raindrops to form into crystals as the rain droplet comes from the cloud and gets
bigger and bigger because the vapor condensates it.  Eventually the droplet
gets so cold they freeze into a microscopic ice crystal which is known as snow.
First big dump' of snow hits the South Island, closing highways ...First snowfall of year on Hawke's Bay peaks - NZ Herald
Light bounces off the clouds and the atmosphere particles get shattered.
This leaves longer light wavelengths than we see causing snow to look white. Snow also helps
cover the Earth's surface and once it melts it helps form rivers, lakes and reservoirs.
Rain
is formed when  droplets of water that fall from clouds. Heat from the Sun turns moisture (water) from plants and leaves, as well as oceans, lakes, and rivers, into water vapour (gas), which disappears into the air. This vapour rises, cools, and changes into tiny water droplets, which form clouds.
In conclusion I think that this was a very interesting thing to research.
I did not know this much about snow and how it was created.
Now I have more knowledge around this topic.
