Activity 3: Weird and Wonderful (summer learning journey)

Activity 3: Weird and Wonderful (summer learning journey)

New Zealand is just one of many countries that has amazing plants and trees. In fact, the African desert is home to some pretty incredible plants, like the cactus. Some cacticous are able to survive on as little as 3 millilitres (ml) of water a day. Wow!
Let’s imagine that you are given a cactus for your birthday. To keep it alive, you must give it 3 ml of water every day.
Over one full year, how much water will you need to give your cactus plant?

Task On your blog, tell us how to solve this maths problem. You can write your answer in words, use a Sketchpad image, or post a video explaining how you would figure it out. Be sure to give us your final answer.

First you times 3 ml. by 365 ml. because thats how many day there are in a year so that equals 1095 ml.

  1. Hi Nevaeh

Well done with working out the answer for this one. You are correct. Did you think about what the answer might be if it was a leap year? Doesn't change the answer by much but it does change.
It is always good to be able to show your working out when solving a maths programme so that everyone knows that you understand what you are doing. Next time if you could show us the steps that you took to get to this answer that would be great!

I saw your name in the paper last night saying that you were off to the Colgate Games. Good luck with that and I hope that you do really well and achieve some personal bests in your events.
My kids always went to Colgate as well. It is so much fun and you make friends for life at these sort of events.
Let me know how you get on once you come back!

    Until next time

    Allie :)
