Reducing Our Plastic Waste

In room seven we have been doing our topic around reducing plastic waste. So we made beeswax wrap instead of glad wrap and also material bags.

Ingredients for beeswax wrap and how to make it.

-baking paper
-fabric
-beeswax
-tray
iron

First you lay the baking paper on the tray. Then you  grate the beeswax. Then put the fabric on the baking paper. Put the grated beeswax on the fabric and get another piece of baking paper and put it over top and iron until it is melted and spread around. Carefully peel the baking paper off and hang up the beeswax wrap to dry for 30 seconds and it is done.

For the material bags we cut  out our patterns and sewed it together. I enjoyed making them.

Our Play Summery

Play Summary - Term 3 Weeks 1-2
For the next two weeks you are working in groups
to practice and perform a
play. This is using our oral language and
reading skills in literacy. Our key
competency focus is participating and contributing.

For writing your task is to summarise the main events in
your play in three paragraphs. You must plan your writing first
but it is up to you how you do your planning.  You must also write
a fourth paragraph about your experience of practising and performing
your play.

Yr 6
I am learning to organise my text into paragraphs which begin with a main idea and
contain supporting information/detail.
I am learning to make links across paragraphs.
I am learning to use basic punctuation accurately.
I am learning to use dialogue punctuation accurately.

Yr 7
I am learning to use a range of different planning styles.

Once you have finished your writing highlight these success criteria green if you have met
them and can
show them in your work. Highlight green in your work where you have met these success criteria.

Maui wants to go fishing with his brothers but his brothers refuse. They think he is too much trouble and is too young. He sits down and makes a plan. He started weaving flax together to make a fishing rod. He gets his magical hook that his grandmother gave him and ties it to the end.

The next morning Maui  got up before his brothers and snuck in the waka and  hid. The four brothers didn't see him. When the brothers got up they moved the waka into the water, “It’s heavier than usual,’’ they said to each other. They then got over it and got into the waka.    Then they paddle out to sea.

A while later Maui jumped up from the waka and he surprised his brothers and shouted, “I’m Here .“ He lowered his rod and made a chant with it and brought up a giant ika. Then Maui went to go get his hook from the head of the giant ika and he told his four brothers not to cut the fish. The four brothers cut up the fish anyway. They cut pieces of the fish for their whanau and themselves. Because Maui's brothers chopped the fish up that's what created the hills in the North Island. The giant ika became the the North island of Aotearoa.

About our Play

In our play I think that our team did ok but I think that the play didn't really involve much actions and some of us didn't get much to say. But I did enjoy it. It was fun getting to act and work in a team. We contributed by bringing props from our houses.
Next time we need to do more actions.

Term 2 Weeks 9-10

Purpose of these reading activities is to: increase our knowledge of space
exploration and understand how our knowledge and ideas about space
have changed over time (science).
We are also learning to read non-fiction texts and use our writing skills to share
our understanding of this topic and our ideas (literacy).
Throughout this task we will need to use the skills of ‘Thinking’ and using
‘Language, Symbols and Text.’

Learning Intentions
I am learning to skim and scan text to identify the main ideas.
I am learning to locate the key sentences and questions in texts.
I am learning to use sub-headings to guide me to the main ideas in text.
I am learning to summarise the main ideas in the texts I read.
(from the Karoro Programme of work for Reading)

I am learning to write well structured paragraphs.

-I have have scanned text to find key ideas.
-I have summarised the main ideas from the reading.
-I have put my answers in chronological order.
-I have written two well structured paragraphs explaining how some of our ideas about space have
changed over time (introductory sentence, supporting detail, concluding sentence).

Read the three paper based reading activities given to you about Stephen Hawking,  Galileo Galilei and
The Telescope. You will be put with a buddy to do this work. We will mark and discuss our answers
together as a class.

To add to our learning we will watch/ read and discuss these following videos or articles. Image result for big bang theory space

After we have completed these reading activities and viewing and discussing the above materials
your task is to write at least two well structured paragraphs explaining how our ideas about space have
changed over time.

Write your paragraphs here.

Ideas About Space Have Changed
With Stephen Hawkings.

Stephen Hawkings was a well known Cosmologist
And he improved our knowledge about space.
Firstly, Stephen was interested and liked learning about black
holes. He was curious about what came  out of them. He knew
that not even light could escape but he had amazing skills and
thinking and he actually found out that radiation came out of
black holes. People used to think if light could not escape then
nothing could but he proved them wrong.  This is an example
of how Stephen Hawking changed our thinking.

Stephen Hawking also developed a theory about how the
universe started his  theory is called the big bang theory.
All scientists have theories and Stephen had theories around
the big bang. His theory was that a black hole exploded then
the universe slowly began to grow bigger and bigger as it
formed the planets. We do not know if this is true or not but it
doesn't sound impossible. As you can see Stephen Hawking
has changed our ideas about space aka black holes and the
beginning of our universe.

Without his amazing thinking we would practically know
nothing about black holes until an another amazing scientist
came along.

Self assessment

I have an introductory sentence for each paragraph: YES

I have at least three sentences giving supporting detail:  YES

I have a concluding sentence: YESImage result for tick symbol
